Cyber Security Architect

What is a Cyber Security Architect?

As an aeronautical cyber security architect, your task is to make aeronautical systems secure while ensuring the highest level of safety (for all assets). Starting at the earliest stages of design, a security architect follows the principle of “security by design”. But what does this mean exactly? You start by designing security architectures, controls and countermeasures throughout the development process, collaborating with experts in a variety of aircraft disciplines, and incorporate them into the architecture. In the end, your solution must comply with airworthiness requirements and increase the safety of the aircraft. 

As an architect, you must also take over the technical lead for security experts and act as the interface during the development process to other design departments.

What are the super powers required?

To say it simply: 

First: Understanding what an aircraft needs to fly.

Second: Understanding why cyber security is more than a firewall and that cyber security consists of more than a technology. 

So the superpower you need is being two people in one/having two heads in one body. You have to be an engineer and a security specialist at the same time. You have to be able to negotiate between these two disciplines. That includes analysing the design, elaborate on complex architectures and systems from the point of security and safety. 

How did Philip Weiland become a Cyber Security Architect?

Philip studied electrical engineering at Bundeswehr University in Munich. During his time in the military, he became a specialist and trainer for the military, as well as governmental networks, as well as for secure military ground and aerospace communication. 

Since starting at Airbus CyberSecurity in 2018, he has become part of the aeronautical security team thus combining engineering skills with a strong security focus.
